Excerpt: "Dear Reed: I have delayed sending back the proof sheets of the third edition of your "Cadet Life at West Point" because I wanted to read them. This I have finally found time to accomplish, but I really have not the time to write out my views on the book as I would like to do for you can appreciate my situation when I tell you that we leave here on the 17th inst. and the house is completely torn up. I think, however, that in addition to having written a very interesting book you have given the public one full of valuable information, particularly useful to young men who contemplate entering this academy. The book recalls many pleasant incidents of our own cadet life and conditions now are very little changed from our day, especially as we are to return to the four-year course with entrance for the new class back to June again."
