Wie müssen Gesellschaft und gesellschaftlicher Diskurs aussehen, wenn der Mensch und seine Bedürfnisse in den Mittelpunkt gerückt werden? Mit dieser Frage beschäftigt sich das vorliegende Werk aus kommunikationswissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Um die Asymmetrie von Anerkennungsstrukturen sichtbar zu machen, hat die zugrunde liegende Dissertation die Verhandlung von Mutterschaft auf verschiedenen Diskursebenen (Wissenschaft, Politik, Wirtschaft, Alltag) und Medienkanälen (Leitmedien, Zeitschriften, TV-Werbung, Instagram) qualitativ und analytisch aufgearbeitet. Welche Auswirkungen hat die Darstellung und Problematisierung der Mutter auf das Individuum? Es wird u.a. deutlich, dass Mutterschaft aus einer Leistungsperspektive evaluiert wird, die auf der anderen Seite einen Erschöpfungsdiskurs evoziert. Dieser resultiert insbesondere aus der Abwertung von Care-Arbeit und dem gleichzeitigen Leitbild eines >Adult-Worker-Modells<. Im Alltagsdiskurs zeigt sich hingegen, wie stark die individuellen Vorstellungen von Mutterschaft durch die eigenen Erfahrungen, insbesondere Verlust- und Defiziterfahrungen geprägt sind. Am Schluss der Arbeit steht der drängende Aufruf, ganzheitliche Perspektiven einzunehmen und die Angewiesenheit des Menschen in das Zentrum gesellschaftlichen Gestaltens zu rücken.
