Dicen que "de la risa viene el llanto o que "de la risa al llanto sólo hay un paso" o a la inversa; el caso es que la humanidad siempre ha quedado sujeta a oscilar en medio de sus emociones; por eso, no resulta extraño que en nuestra literatura de tradición oral hallemos formas propicias para la risa como pueden ser el chiste, los cuentos jocosos y los cuentos de costumbres donde la carecterización de los personajes tiende a llevarlos a la ridiculización hasta los géneros menos propicios para la carcajada —como el romance, el corrido y la leyenda— pero que siempre dejan asomar una sonrisa.
