La situación de la que trata este libro comienza a entretejerse hace varias décadas. En el año 1960, Valdivia sufre el mayor terremoto registrado de la historia de la humanidad, generando el hundimiento de tierras y dando origen a lo que llegaría a ser el Humedal del Río Cruces. Por el mismo tiempo, comienza en parte del territorio centro sur de Chile el desarrollo de plantaciones forestales de especies introducidas y la construcción de industrias para el procesamiento de productos del bosque. Así surge un importante proceso de reforestación de terrenos abiertos y degradados, lo que posibilitó la conformación de grandes empresas forestales y de celulosa, inicialmente de propiedad del Estado. Años más tarde, la intervención humana sobre el ecosistema del Humedal del Río Cruces en la Región de Los Ríos, hábitat característico del Cisne de cuello negro (Cygnus melancoryphus), entre otras diversas especies, se intensificó críticamente a partir del 2004. Esto coincidió con el comienzo de las operaciones de la planta de celulosa Valdivia (CELCO-Arauco), la que descarga sus efluentes aproximadamente 15 km aguas arriba del Humedal. Se trata de procesos caracterizados por intervenciones en el medioambiente y por los conflictos sociales derivados de la confrontación de visiones acerca de diferentes modelos de desarrollo, que se describen y analizan en esta obra desde la perspectiva sociológica y de las ciencias naturales con una rigurosa base documental.
