En este libro se presentan y analizan las principales corrientes y organizaciones de las izquierdas mexicanas, desde el extinto Partido Comunista hasta el PRD y Morena. La presencia del reformismo de izquierda tuvo, como en otros países, críticas y cuestionamientos izquierdistas. Entre estas corrientes destacaron el trotskismo, el espartaquismo, el maoísmo y los movimientos armados. Al margen de las organizaciones partidarias son considerados el Movimiento de Liberación Nacional y, obviamente, el movimiento estudiantil de 1968, dos momentos importantes en la vida política de las izquierdas. Al autor le interesó destacar las principales diferencias entre el reformismo, en sus varias versiones y evolución, y las posiciones que lo cuestionaron desde la izquierda autodenominada revolucionaria, tanto armada como pacífica. Asimismo, los reveses sufridos por ambas posiciones en su travesía por alcanzar sus propósitos. Entre las adversidades enfrentadas por las izquierdas, incluidas las gradualistas (menos vulnerables que las revolucionarias), sobresalió la represión incluso militar. En el largo trayecto de las izquierdas, éstas han tenido que sortear todo tipo de obstáculos (aun en el presente) suscitados desde el poder político y económico de México. Su historia, al margen de sus propios errores, ha sido difícil y, en el mejor de los casos, tolerada por el autoritarismo gubernamental que ahora, vale decir, es menos agresivo que en el pasado.
