Aunque, por sus características, también tienen un riesgo potencial de uso excesivo o patológico, que puede acabar teniendo unas consecuencias muy negativas en la vida de las personas afectadas por esta problemática y sus familias.El tratamiento de este trastorno es complejo, no tanto por la dificultad de abordar los síntomas de la adicción a las nuevas tecnologías, sino por la escasa motivación y conciencia del trastorno que, frecuentemente, presentan las personas con este problema (especialmente los más jóvenes). Sin embargo, cuando estos aspectos mejoran, la terapia tiene muchas probabilidades de finalizar con éxito.
