¿Es el Catolicismo del siglo XXI el producto de un proceso histórico que fue estructurando los dogmas que hoy lo definen o es más bien el producto de una lógica impecable que fue aplicándose a medida que los momentos históricos fueron apareciendo? O es más bien este cuerpo de creencias un combinado de ambas dinámicas? Afirmamos que es el producto de ambas dinámicas. El proceso se inicia cuando cristianos inquisidores -- como siempre los ha habido a lo largo de la historia -- hicieron preguntas validas y profundas. La primera de ellas fue indagar cómo debía entenderse la misteriosa naturaleza de Cristo: su divinidad y su humanidad. Una vez definidas estas explicaciones en los Concilios como verdades de Fe, de ahí en adelante se derivaron una serie de dogmas adicionales con una lógica interna evidente. Esta lógica es simple y compleja a la vez. Simple en la medida que cada dogma se fue estructurando sobre las bases del anterior y compleja porque a medida que se buscaban explicaciones adecuadas a lo que se preguntaba o se afirmaba, dichos dogmas se volvieron cada vez más elaborados y más inamovibles. Para entender la lógica y las razones históricas que definieron dichos dogmas es necesario comprender primero, cuánto de la definición de los mismos fue más el producto de intereses políticos, económicos y de poder de sus autores en ese momento; y segundo, cuánto del dogma corresponde a la lógica que los hilvana.
