Dice Joseph Stiglitz que la economía ha olvidado su esencia social, que está enfrascada en una serie de indicadores que únicamente reflejan una parte -la numérica- de la realidad. Pensemos, por ejemplo, en el Producto Interno Bruto, el famosísimo PIB, un indicador surgido para medir cuánto produce un país. Pero está claro que un país no es únicamente lo que produce. La hipótesis central de este libro parte de este postulado de Stiglitz, reconociendo que los economistas del gobierno han olvidado que su materia de estudio tiene por objeto central al ser humano. En sí, podríamos resumirla de la siguiente manera: dado que son los actores del sistema político quienes han definido la economía nacional, el mal desempeño económico no sólo se traslada a múltiples factores de la vida diaria y del propio desarrollo del país, sino que también afecta al sistema político como tal, entendido este como un pacto federal. El nivel de desarrollo del país es tremendamente desigual, tal cual lo prueba un norte rico frente a un sur paupérrimo. Llama la atención, quizá, como esa desigualdad se expresó políticamente en 2006 y cómo entonces se advirtió de la teoría de los dos Méxicos.
