Esta obra aborda un tema mapuche que desde el siglo XV ha sorprendido a la élite militar, religiosa y política de los colonizadores: cómo entender una sociedad en la que las personas hacen gala y ostentación de su individualidad, de sus nombres propios como Caupolicán, Magnin o Coñuepán. Si en el mundo hispano-criollo el sujeto desaparecía bajo el peso de las instituciones estatales, en el mundo mapuche las instituciones dependían de los sujetos. Este libro nos propone una lectura novedosa para este tema, que, consciente de las trampas de la "etnicidad", aborda lo mapuche con una perspectiva ontológica, cuyo punto de partida es develar cómo se concibe al sujeto en la propia vida mapuche rural. Esto encarna un giro radical para pensar lo mapuche, que excede las coordenadas étnico/culturales, y nos invita a entenderlo como una manera de ser-en-el-mundo. Con ello, este trabajo no sólo constituye un importante aporte a la antropología de los pueblos indígenas sudamericanos, sino también una aproximación a comprender las dificultades que entrampan hoy al multiculturalismo nacional.
