Ito ay binago at pinagyamang edisyon ng Makabagong Filipino sa Nagbabagong Panahon (Filipino 1) at Makabuluhang Filipino sa Iba't Ibang Pagkakataon (Filipino 2) na parehong limbag ng C & E Publishing, Inc., bilang tugon sa bagong kurikulum na Khanggang 12 ng Kagawaran ng Edukasyon. Iniakma ang batayang aklat na ito sa mga pagbabagong nagaganap sa kasalukuyang panahon hatid ng mass media at makabagong teknolohiya, lalong-lalo na ang malaganap na paggamit ng cellphone, iPad at tablet ng mga kabataan at ng maraming tao hindi lang sa Pilipinas kundi sa buong mundo. Inihahanda ng batayang aklat na ito ang mga mag-aaral sa realidad ng pagbabagong ito at sa kahalagahan ng mabisa, matalino, at kapaki-pakinabang na komunikasyon sa ika-21 siglo. Bukod pa rito, nakadisenyo ang batayang aklat na ito para matutuhan at maranasan ng mga mag-aaral ang paglahok sa mga kolaboratibong gawain at makapaghain ng mga makabagong ideya at solusyon sa mga problemang haharapin nila ngayon at sa hinaharap hinggil sa kanilang personal at propesyonal na buhay at pakikisalamuha sa lipunan.
