A través del examen de algunos textos de estos poetas propone una visión del desarrollo de la poesía en Chile desde la constitución de las vanguardias –pasando por su crisis e incorporación al Museo y el Mercado– hasta la aparición de los antipoemas de Nicanor Parra, un sorprendente anticipo de lo que se ha denominado más tarde disposición postmoderna. Asimismo, se estudia el desarrollo contradictorio de la poesía nerudiana desde sus orígenes –e incluyendo su discutida poesía de voluntarismo político– hasta su mirada retrospectiva, crítica y melancólica, de gran penetración en la historia y la naturaleza contenida en sus últimos poemas.
