Les Urgències de l'Hospital Clínic han estat el testimoni del compromís de la Institució pel servei a la ciutat de Barcelona. Tant és així que, des de l'any 1935, no han deixat de funcionar ni un sol dia. El fil conductor d'aquest llibre és la cronologia històrica del Servei d'Urgències. Així, es comença per la seva creació durant la Segona República, se segueix per la Guerra Civil, la postguerra i després els capítols es titulen segons la ubicació de les Urgències, al carrer Casanova, al de Villarroel, a l'edifici actual i els seus annexos. A més, cada un dels serveis i els estaments professionals que han estat presents en les Urgències del Clínic tenen un recorregut propi que es recull en capítols específics escrits pels seus actors. Passar d'unes instal·lacions precàries com les del carrer Villarroel al nou edifici va significar un gran avenç. No obstant això, la verticalitat i la situació de l'edifici actual al bell mig del pati han estat els reptes més importants a superar que han tingut les direccions de l'Hospital, per la qual cosa l'aposta per l'ampliació i la millora dels espais sempre ha estat present. Tanmateix, el model assistencial que caracteritza el Servei d'Urgències de l'Hospital Clínic de Barcelona i les innovacions implementades al llarg dels seus vuitanta-set anys d'existència l'han convertit en centre de referència.
