Der Regisseur Luis García Berlanga (1921-2010) gilt neben Luis Buñuel und Juan Antonio Bardem als einer der Begründer des modernen spanischen Kinos, ist im deutschsprachigen Raum allerdings weitgehend unbekannt geblieben. Sein hundertster Geburtstag im Jahre 2021 wurde daher als Anlass genommen, um erstmals in deutscher Sprache umfassend in sein Werk einzuführen.Beeinflusst vom italienischen Neorealismus schuf Berlanga ein kritisches Kino voller ironischer und grotesker Pointen, das ihm zwar Probleme mit der Franco-Zensur einbrachte, ihm aber gleichzeitig den Weg zum europäischen Autorenkino und zu den großen internationalen Festivals öffnete.Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge von ausgewiesenen Spezialisten beschränken sich nicht nur auf seine Meisterwerke ¡Bienvenido, Mr. Marshall! (1952), Plácido (1961) oder El Verdugo (1963), sondern zeichnen seine Entwicklung von seinen Anfängen bis zur seinem letzten Werk nach. Ergänzt wird der Reigen durch ein bisher kaum beachtetes Interview.
