Las Hurdes, el país de la leyenda es un estudio sobre la comarca extremeña que se constituyó para la opinión pública como el reducto geográfico más representativo del atraso peninsular. Desde diversas perspectivas se examinan los factores que determinaron las penosas condiciones de vida de la población y que contribuyeron a forjar la leyenda de Las Hurdes. La propuesta reformadora de los ilustrados sólo fue seriamente considerada cien años después, durante la Restauración, donde destaca la aportación del notario Romualdo Martín Santibáñez. Positivismo, regeneracionismo y catolicismo social fueron algunas de las corrientes ideológicas que contribuyeron a desvelar definitivamente las ficciones que encubría la vieja leyenda.
