Pese a la escasez de los textos que nos han quedado de los presocráticos, sus propuestas siguen siendo una fuente inagotable de sugerencias para el estudio. En este libro se reúnen diversos ensayos que abordan cuestiones centrales del pensamiento de estos pioneros de la filosofía en Grecia (lo que quiere decir la de Filosofía, sin más). Algunas de ellas, como la forma literaria de sus escritos o como sus ideas lingüísticas, no han sido frecuentemente objeto de análisis. Otras, en cambio, son cuestiones debatidas a las que se trata de dar respuestas originales.Especialmente interesante es la presencia de un texto, el Papiro de Derveni, en el que se desarrolla una nueva cosmogonía, con puntos de contacto con las de otros presocráticos, pero que constituye una síntesis muy singular. Aunque el libro está escrito en forma fácilmente comprensible, porque está pensado para un público amplio, puede contener algunas sugerencias atractivas incluso para los especialistas.
