Il volgare italiano, di cui Dante tesse l'elogio nel Convivio, diventa oggetto di studio scientifico in questo trattato latino, progettato in quattro libri nel 1303-04, ma interrotto nel 1305 al quattordicesimo capitolo del secondo libro. Studio critico della storia letteraria del Duecento, l'opera è un contributo al dibattito che vedeva contrapposti il latino, lingua di cultura per eccellenza ma costruzione artificiale dei grammatici, e il volgare italiano, la lingua del «sì», lingua naturale e materna che il bambino apprende dalla propria nutrice. Dopo aver affrontato temi quali l'origine del linguaggio, il formarsi delle lingue, il loro suddividersi in idiomi e dialetti, Dante spiega le ragioni della sua avversione alle parlate regionali e propone che, in mancanza di un idioma unitario, sia affidato agli scrittori un raffinamento della lingua viva, che attinga alle più alte espressioni della lirica italiana. Pur nella sua incompiutezza, il De vulgari eloquentia è il primo tentativo di dare dignità e struttura formale all'italiano nel suo farsi lingua ma anche strumento di unità politica e culturale della penisola.
