Charles Gleyre, né 1806, mort le 5 mai 1874 à Paris, est un peintre suisse, qui exerça son art à Paris, puis à Rome. En 1834, il voyage pour un long voyage vers la Sicile, la Grèce, l'Égypte et le Soudan, puis au Proche-Orient. Plusieurs de ses tableaux orientalistes sont détruits lors d'un incendie au Caire en 1837.Il est nommé professeur à l'École des beaux-arts de Paris en 1843.. Il formera dans son atelier certains de ceux qui deviendront les peintres impressionnistes, Alfred Sisley, Claude Monet, Frédéric Bazille, James Abbott McNeillWhistler et Auguste Renoir. Ses œuvres les plus connues sont: Femme turque (DudoNarikos), Smyrne, Étude pour la danse des bacchantes, Trois Fellahs, 1835, La Danse des bacchantes, 1849, Le Déluge, 1856, Les Romains passant sous le joug, 1858, Le Coucher de Sapho, 1867, Le Matin (le Paradis terrestre), 1869-1874, esquisse, Le Retour de l'Enfant prodigue, 1873, Minerve et les Grâces, 1866.
