Ciò fu il risultato di un lungo processo di declino dell'Impero romano d'Occidente in cui quest'ultimo non riuscì a far rispettare il suo dominio sulle sue province e il suo vasto territorio fu diviso in diverse entità. Gli storici moderni hanno ipotizzato diversi fattori causali tra cui il declino dell'efficienza del suo esercito, la salute e il numero della popolazione, la crisi dell'economia, l'incompetenza degli imperatori, le lotte interne per il potere, i mutamenti religiosi e l'inefficienza dell'amministrazione civile.
