Succeduto nel 1416, all'età di 20 anni, al padre Ferdinando I al vertice della Corona d'Aragona, Alfonso V nel 1420 si recò a Napoli su richiesta della regina Giovanna II, che lo adottò e gli assicurò la successione al suo regno. Dopo tre anni, tuttavia, la volubile sovrana revocò l'adozione e il re d'Aragona ritornò in Spagna per risolvere i contrasti che nel frattempo erano insorti tra i suoi fratelli e il re di Castiglia, Giovanni II. Dopo la morte della regina Giovanna, partecipò contro Renato d'Angiò alla guerra di successione al trono di Napoli, che riuscì a conquistare nel 1442. Per consolidare quel trono Alfonso prese parte alle guerre che impegnarono i diversi potentati italiani, proseguendo tuttavia poi a combattere con la repubblica di Genova, i cui mercanti erano i principali concorrenti dei suoi sudditi catalani nel Mediterraneo. Napoli divenne di fatto la capitale dei domini di Alfonso che, grazie al mecenatismo con cui accolse gli uomini di cultura, fece della sua corte un importante centro del Rinascimento italiano. Per la sua liberalità gli umanisti gli attribuirono l'appellativo di Magnanimo.
