Il volume ripercorre l'itinerario biografico e intellettuale di Galileo, soffermandosi a illustrarne il pensiero cosĂ come consegnato alle diverse opere redatte nel corso della lunga carriera scientifica. Sono confrontati, con rigore scientifico e agevole leggibilitĂ , i risultati conseguiti dal grande scienziato pisano e le posizioni espresse dalla cultura della sua epoca, al fine di far emergere i caratteri assolutamente originali della lezione galileiana. Il fondamentale contributo di Galileo alla storia della scienza consiste nel modello d'indagine naturalistica nel cui solco si Ăš poi sviluppata la moderna scienza matematica e sperimentale ("provando e riprovando"). Al contempo, la riflessione galileiana sul tema dei rapporti tra scienza e fede ha rimarcato con grande nettezza l'imprescindibile autonomia dell'impresa scientifica rispetto a ogni condizionamento esterno, rivendicando ai sensi e alla ragione degli uomini il compito di provvedere in piena libertĂ alla comprensione dei fenomeni del mondo fisico. Da questo punto di vista, il drammatico contrasto che oppose Galileo alle autoritĂ ecclesiastiche, sfociato nel processo e nella condanna del 1633, rappresenta l'esito sfortunato del tentativo d'imprimere un radicale mutamento di rotta agli orientamenti culturali del suo tempo, nel segno di una decisa affermazione della prioritĂ cognitiva (in ambito naturalistico) della pratica scientifica.
