Sconfitto Antonio ad Azio nel 31 a.C., Ottaviano diventa il signore assoluto del grande dominio creato da Roma che contribuisce ad estendere ulteriormente. Imprevedibilmente rinuncia al potere assoluto per un regime monarchico in cui sono però valorizzate componenti importanti della tradizione politica repubblicana. Diventa così Principe, organizzando un sistema politico complesso e originale. L'eccezionale sua posizione all'interno dello Stato è peraltro sancita dall'appellativo Augusto, senza precedenti, conferitogli dal senato.
