Alla luce di un'attenta analisi delle fonti, degli scritti e delle azioni dei protagonisti di lontane vicende, Marina Montesano delinea un quadro in cui la "caccia" emerge, da una parte come un elemento costitutivo della modernità, dall'altra come una risposta a esigenze riaffioranti nella società in epoche diverse. Non solo e non tanto nel "barbaro Medioevo", dunque, quanto e soprattutto in epoche in cui il trionfo della ragione e del diritto dovrebbero avere il sopravvento. A tal fine l'autrice prende in esame, per un confronto, alcuni casi contemporanei che presentano elementi assai simili alle persecuzioni antistregoniche dei secoli passati.
