Il tuono dei «cannoni d'agosto» del 1914 diede il via alla Grande Guerra e segnò l'inizio di una nuova versione del «Grande Gioco». Negli anni Trenta del Novecento furono il Terzo Reich, l'Unione Sovietica e l'Italia fascista ad attuare una penetrazione in Afghanistan che doveva consegnare nelle mani di Hitler, Stalin e Mussolini l'avamposto da cui far partire l'avanzata delle tre dittature verso l'Asia meridionale.Dopo il decennio dell'occupazione sovietica, il regime teocratico talebano, l'invasione statunitense del 2001, la partita continua ancora oggi nell'area che è stata definita il «Grande Scacchiere» dove si deciderà il conflitto per la supremazia globale.
