Dionisio rappresenta il tiranno per antonomasia: crudele e pauroso, circondato da adulatori e incapace di mantenere relazioni positive con familiari, amici e collaboratori.Il cosiddetto Orecchio di Dionisio — l'ingresso alla celebre cava di pietre di Siracusa — deve il suo nome alla paranoica volontà di controllo attribuita al signore di Siracusa. L'aneddoto più celebre che lo riguarda è quello della spada di Damocle, che ci fa intuire i mortali pericoli insiti nel potere che gestiva. Ma questa rappresentazione negativa del sovrano è viziata dalla tradizione a lui ostile, che prevalse sulla storiografia più favorevole, pervenutaci solo in parte: grazie a quest'ultima possiamo intravedere capacità politiche e militari fuori dall'ordinario. La gestione della continua conflittualità contro i Cartaginesi gli spianò la strada per il controllo di Siracusa. La città divenne un punto di riferimento per grandezza e bellezza, e soprattutto per le grandiose opere di fortificazione. Il modo in cui Dionisio prese il potere e lo gestì rimase decisamente paradigmatico, e il suo carisma politico non sfuggì neppure ad Alessandro Magno e a Scipione l'Africano che videro in lui un modello. Le guerre contro i Greci d'Italia e le pericolose alleanze con i barbari logorarono via via la sua immagine, specialmente presso gli Ateniesi. Ma la sua corte divenne un polo di attrazione per letterati e filosofi, anche perché lo stesso Dionisio amava comporre versi tragici, con una certa sopravvalutazione delle proprie capacità. Drammi familiari e difficili relazioni personali condizionarono in parte il suo agire, ma Dionisio resse il potere a lungo e in sicurezza fino alla morte, che lo colse nel suo letto.
