Figlio della tradizione repubblicana della sua famiglia, ma soprattutto di Genova, Goffredo, come gli antichi trovatori genovesi, sa usare con uguale impegno la spada e la penna. Questo giovanissimo poeta, fedele alle idee di Giuseppe Mazzini, suo maestro, vive la propria giovinezza entusiasta e ardente sui campi di battaglia celebrando la stagione aurorale del difficile cammino verso l'Unità. E proprio a lui Mazzini affida la stesura di un canto destinato a incidere nella mente degli Italiani il programma de «La Giovine Italia». «La vittoria del discepolo è la gloria del maestro », scrisse nel Medioevo Gerberto d'Aurillac; molti secoli dopo Goffredo, discepolo di Mazzini, scrive Fratelli d'Italia, e sarà l'Inno della Repubblica Italiana.
