Breve e gloriosa è stata la vita di Goffredo Mameli, morto il 6 luglio 1849 a soli ventuno anni combattendo per la Repubblica Romana. Figlio della tradizione repubblicana della sua famiglia, ma soprattutto di Genova, Goffredo, come gli antichi trovatori genovesi, sa usare con uguale impegno la spada e la penna. Questo giovanissimo poeta, fedele alle idee di Giuseppe Mazzini, suo maestro, vive la propria giovinezza entusiasta e ardente sui campi di battaglia celebrando la stagione aurorale del difficile cammino verso l'Unità. E proprio a lui Mazzini affida la stesura di un canto destinato a incidere nella mente degli Italiani il programma de «La Giovine Italia». «La vittoria del discepolo è la gloria del maestro », scrisse nel Medioevo Gerberto d'Aurillac; molti secoli dopo Goffredo, discepolo di Mazzini, scrive Fratelli d'Italia, e sarà l'Inno della Repubblica Italiana.
