Alcuni storici del mondo antico considerano questa epidemia la causa remota della gravissima crisi che avrebbe travolto la Roma dei Cesari; ma tutti ne circoscrivono la portata entro i limiti dell'Impero. Oggi però, la diffusione delle infezioni di origine zoonotica, di cui il Covid-19 è la variante piú recente, ha indotto a riconsiderare la questione da una visuale differente: quella dei virologi. Ponendo a confronto le fonti storiografiche latine e quelle della Cina degli Han, emerge un nuovo quadro: la peste antonina arrivò in Occidente dalla Cina imperiale tramite l'incrocio in Persia fra i legionari romani in guerra coi Parti e i mercanti cinesi in pianta stabile a Baghdad. Questa ipotesi traccia un itinerario epidemiologico analogo a quello del Covid-19 disegnando uno scenario in cui la pandemia che ci affligge apparirebbe come l'ultimo ritrovato di un tipo di infezione animale-uomo risalente almeno a due millenni fa. Se cosí fosse, la peste antonina andrebbe considerata come la prima pandemia documentata della storia e da essa, forse, abbiamo ancora qualcosa da imparare.
