Dieci milioni di morti fra uomini, donne e bambini. È il bilancio della peste antonina che, sotto il principato di Marco Aurelio, flagellò l'Impero romano all'apice della sua potenza. Alcuni storici del mondo antico considerano questa epidemia la causa remota della gravissima crisi che avrebbe travolto la Roma dei Cesari; ma tutti ne circoscrivono la portata entro i limiti dell'Impero. Oggi però, la diffusione delle infezioni di origine zoonotica, di cui il Covid-19 è la variante piú recente, ha indotto a riconsiderare la questione da una visuale differente: quella dei virologi. Ponendo a confronto le fonti storiografiche latine e quelle della Cina degli Han, emerge un nuovo quadro: la peste antonina arrivò in Occidente dalla Cina imperiale tramite l'incrocio in Persia fra i legionari romani in guerra coi Parti e i mercanti cinesi in pianta stabile a Baghdad. Questa ipotesi traccia un itinerario epidemiologico analogo a quello del Covid-19 disegnando uno scenario in cui la pandemia che ci affligge apparirebbe come l'ultimo ritrovato di un tipo di infezione animale-uomo risalente almeno a due millenni fa. Se cosí fosse, la peste antonina andrebbe considerata come la prima pandemia documentata della storia e da essa, forse, abbiamo ancora qualcosa da imparare.
