Il volume, oltre ad offrire al lettore una chiara esposizione del complesso periodo storico, fa emergere la biografia della Pimentel in tutti i risvolti drammatici del suo vissuto, dalla separazione dal marito, alle gravidanze mancate, intrecciandola all'evolversi di idee e avvenimenti politico-sociali che caratterizzarono il panorama dell'Italia e particolarmente del Mezzogiorno alla fine del XVIII secolo.
