In questo profilo biografico l'autore individua un filo conduttore nell'insofferenza verso il disordine del mondo, inteso come falsità, carestia, malattia, conflitto, e il programma di porvi rimedio una volta per tutte, attraverso un governo universale, risposta politica a quella prima globalizzazione di fine Cinquecento: un mondo più unito da navigazione, economia e diffusione della fede cristiana, ma pieno di ingiustizia. Campanella individuò nel cristianesimo e nella Chiesa cattolica l'ideologia e la guida di questa trasformazione; mentre l'allarme per l'imminente apocalisse, suonato da calamità naturali e segni celesti, avrebbe dovuto persuadere dell'urgenza della trasformazione, imporne le misure straordinarie: un linguaggio che in fondo ci è oggi piuttosto familiare.
