L'ultimo atto delle campagne orientali di Aureliano si svolse proprio sotto le mura di Palmira, l'esito fu la sconfitta della regina Zenobia e la sua deportazione a Roma, dove l'imperatore la costrinse a sfilare come simbolo del suo trionfo. Le rovine monumentali di Palmira – oggi oggetto di disumana offesa – ci parlano della grandezza del regno di Zenobia e della sua resistenza eroica. Ancora attuale è la tragedia di questa città: rimasta intatta nei secoli, protetta dalle sabbie del deserto, è crollata sotto la furia della barbarie islamista.
