Fino al XVIII secolo era il "terrore del mondo"; dopo la pesante sconfitta subita a Vienna nel 1683, quando bruscamente e inesorabilmente si avviò verso un lento declino, divenne il "grande malato". Eppure aveva tutt'altro che perduto la sua importanza. I sentimenti nazionalisti che hanno pervaso la storiografia di gran parte dell'Otto e del Novecento hanno gravemente viziato il giudizio e l'apprezzamento nei confronti dell'eredità ottomana. Fino alla fine del Seicento gli abitanti dell'Europa occidentale e centrale a ragione temettero l'espansione ottomana. Le vecchie paure sono dure a morire e sono state astutamente trasformate in pregiudizi culturali diretti nel presente, ad esempio, contro l'ingresso nell'Unione Europea dello Stato nato dalle ceneri dell'Impero ottomano, la Turchia. La società attuale, nella quale trasporti, tecnologie della comunicazione e migrazioni di popoli hanno determinato un confronto con la "diversità" senza precedenti, ha anche altre e importanti ragioni per dedicare la propria attenzione al "caso" ottomano: per la maggior parte della sua storia l'Impero ottomano offrí al resto del mondo un modello efficace di sistema politico multietnico e multireligioso. Il nuovo e aggiornatissimo studio di Donald Quataert (finalmente disponibile anche in traduzione italiana) prende in esame i principali orientamenti proprio degli ultimi tempi dell'Impero, dal 1700 fino alla sua definitiva scomparsa nel 1922. Si propone di spiegare agli Europei quanto e in che modo l'Impero ottomano influenzò il corso della loro storia e la loro cultura.
