Eppure la storia del prodigio che consacra il giovane sovrano «per grazia di Dio» – entrata nell'immaginario collettivo fino a confondersi con la leggenda di Excalibur – non figura nei testi piú antichi che raccontano le imprese del mitico re e dei suoi cavalieri ed è attestata per la prima volta solo nel Merlin di Robert de Boron, un'opera scritta intorno al 1200 la cui fonte di ispirazione era rimasta fino ad oggi sconosciuta. Questa indagine prende le mosse da un confronto fra il celebre episodio arturiano e un racconto molto piú antico, incentrato su un pastorale infisso in una pietra tombale, che risale al tempo di Edoardo il Confessore, re d'Inghilterra e santo. Dai romanzi cortesi alle saghe nordiche emergeranno numerose storie di elezione che hanno per protagonisti giovani di stirpe regale in cerca di legittimazione, pronti a sfidare anche le forze oltremondane per conquistare magnifiche spade e completare la loro iniziazione eroica. Sarà cosí ricostruita una fitta trama di rimandi che restituirà uno scenario tanto piú attendibile quanto piú intricato, utile a gettare nuova luce sulla genesi di uno degli episodi piú celebri di tutta la letteratura medievale.
