Nel 2017 si celebra il bicentenario della nascita di un grande italiano, Francesco De Sanctis (1817-1883), vero fondatore della critica italiana, grazie alla sua produzione saggistica e alla fondamentale Storia della letteratura italiana (1870-'71). In queste pagine viene ripercorsa la parabola umana e culturale di De Sanctis, che nelle lezioni delle sue varie scuole e nei molteplici saggi registra fedelmente i moti e i terremoti della cultura, della letteratura e poi anche della politica italiana pre- e postunitaria. Tuttavia, per lui l'arte non è solo un epifenomeno culturale e non è neppure «un capriccio personale»; è piuttosto consustanziale alla stessa storia, politica e civile dell'Italia, per cui la storia letteraria degli Italiani scorre di pari passo con la vicenda etica della loro «coscienza». Ma forse l'aspetto piú trascurato di De Sanctis è quello politico: piú volte dopo l'Unità deputato e ministro della Pubblica istruzione con Cavour, Ricasoli e poi con Cairoli, fautore di un assai interessante e attuale centro-Sinistra, equidistante dalla reazionaria e clericale Destra e dal radicalismo repubblicano e rivoluzionario della Sinistra storica, è stato sicuramente un protagonista della prima stagione politica postunitaria. Un personaggio anche caratterialmente intrigante: imbranato spasimante, ipocondriaco e pieno di tic in gioventú, polemico contro quasi tutti, critici e scrittori, affascinante e perturbante professore di alunni e alunne, risulta per molti aspetti di straordinaria attualità, quando con spietata lucidità denuncia i mali della politica italiana, quasi immutati dai suoi ai nostri tempi.
