Nell'attraversamento di anni carichi di tensione, due o tre generazioni di letterati italiani approfondiscono il rapporto con gli antichi, in vista dell'elaborazione di nuovi classici, dalle Prose della volgar lingua al Principe, dal Cortegiano al Furioso. Dal grande affresco qui delineato emerge che il "Rinascimento dei moderni" fu in realtà una "cultura della crisi", impegnata a fronteggiare un presente che chiedeva risposte nuove: attuali, e non in latino; generali, e non municipali; plurali, e non univoche.
