Qual era il misterioso idolo che i cavalieri Templari veneravano in segreto? Era forse la Sindone di Torino posseduta dall'Ordine sin dai tempi della IV crociata? Scampata all'arresto dei Templari e alla confisca dei loro beni ordinata da Filippo il Bello nel 1307, tenuta nascosta e sopravvissuta alla dissoluzione dell'Ordine, la Sindone sarebbe poi ricomparsa qualche decennio piú tardi in una piccola chiesa nella diocesi di Troyes.A sostegno o a corollario di questa tesi vengono addotti documenti di vario genere e fonti inattendibili che lasciano spazio ad approssimazioni, errori, anacronismi e dimostrazioni fallaci. Andrea Nicolotti prende in esame ciascuna delle presunte prove e le sottopone al vaglio della critica storica. La conclusione è che questa teoria, come anche tutte le altre volte ad attribuire alla Sindone una storia medievale anteriore alla metà del XIV secolo, è fondata su fraintendimenti e manipolazioni dei testi. Il collegamento tra la Sindone, i Templari e le Crociate risulta pertanto del tutto indimostrato.
