Parecchi mi si raccomandano per aver accomodato chi un difetto e chi un altro». La scena Ú già vista nel Purgatorio (vi 5-9), quando i morti circondano Dante e cercano di sopraffarsi a vicenda, di scalzare il vicino per avere la meglio nel ricevere udienza. Dante «dalla calca si difende». Un vero assedio: «qual va dinanzi, e qual di retro il prende, / e qual da lato li si reca a mente /... e questo e quello intende». In "Cose dell'altro mondo" assistiamo al faccia a faccia tra Pirandello e quel suo doppio d'eccezione che per lui Ú Dante, come emerge anche dalle note di commento che lo scrittore agrigentino ha steso di suo pugno in margine alla "Divina Commedia".
