Il giovane scienziato si convinse di aver fatto una scoperta sensazionale: nacque cosĂ­ l'Antropologia criminale, destinata ariscuotere un enorme e controverso successo internazionale. Ladro o brigante, per un secolo e mezzo Villella non fu che un reperto scientifico, il «totem dell'Antropologia criminale». Nel 2009, l'inaugurazione del nuovo allestimento del Museo «Cesare Lombroso» ha provocato la sorprendente resurrezione mediatica del brigante. Oggi Ăš un personaggio mitico, il totem della lotta contro il razzismo antimeridionale, simbolo del riscatto delle popolazioni native del Regno delle Due Sicilie. L'antropologa nativa Maria Teresa Milicia ricostruisce la scarna esistenza del "brigante" su solide basi documentali e propone un'inedita analisi del razzismo attribuito a Lombroso.
