L'afamada tonada, amb la pantomima, l'ambaixada, el ball, la Mahoma i els versets conformen en l'actualitat un dels actes festius més emblemàtics de tot el País Valencià. Aquest estudi, a més de traure a la llum la primera transcripció coneguda del Ball dels Espies –obra inèdita de Manuel Quislant Botella– i reivindicar la figura del seu autor, presenta una mostra per ordre cronològic de les diverses variants melòdiques de la tonada, classifica les melodies semblants que s'interpreten arreu del País i fa una comparativa entre les estructures dels diferents balls de nanos i la versió de Quislant, tot relacionant-les amb certs aspectes del Ball de Torrent. Finalment, aporta dues instrumentacions per a banda de música i una adaptació per a dolçaina i tabalet.
