Esta teoría no solo es una muy buena ruta alterna de elucidación de la naturaleza del contenido semántico, sino que hace que la filosofía del lenguaje se replantee la formulación de su problema central: el de la relación entre semántica y pragmática. Las fronteras de ambas no están bien delimitadas, como lo suponen las teorías contemporáneas. Con una imagen wittgensteiniana, lo que se quiere mostrar es que el lenguaje es como un río: tiene una dimensión que fluye como el agua, la pragmática, y otra que permanece idéntica como el lecho, la semántica. Esta relación cambia con el tiempo, de modo que lo fluido se solidifica y lo sólido se fluidifica.
