På landet var forandringerne mindre synlige, men herfra udgik stærke bevægelser, der også kom til at præge skolen. Kristen og national vækkelse gik hånd i hånd, nye friskoler blev oprettet, og dansk blev et rigtigt skolefag. Nypædagogiske strømninger, som ville sætte barnet i centrum, spirede frem, og nye eksperter var med til at sætte fokus på skolebarnets krop og hygiejne. Ved periodens slutning var der fortsat forskellige skoleformer, men ideen om en fælles folkeskole havde fået stigende betydning. Grundskolen var blevet en uomgængelig del af ethvert barns liv og en af demokratiets og nationalstatens bærende søjler.
