De udgjorde en sÊrlig mÄde at bo og spise pÄ, og man kunne finde dem i de fleste danske byer. Nogle var kun for mÊnd, andre kun for kvinder. I nogle sad hÞj som lav skulder ved skulder, i andre lukkede man ikke hvem som helst ind. De tilhÞrer tiden fÞr take away og frosne pizzaer. I 1960'erne, da vi flyttede i parcelhus og pÄ kollegium, og vi fik kantiner og supermarkeder, gik de nedenom og hjem.
Pensionatets kulturhistorie. FÊllesskab, flirt og frikadeller stiller skarpt pÄ en overset og helt sÊrlig mÄde at bo og spise pÄ, som blomstrede op i midten af 1800-tallet, og som frem til Anden Verdenskrig levede i bedste velgÄende. Nogle af pensionaterne blev drevet som en storindustriel virksomhed, andre af en husmor, der havde dedikeret sit liv til at bespise et par af byens mange sultne sjÊle. Men uanset stÞrrelsen udgjorde pensionaterne et altafgÞrende fundament for mange af de danskere, der flyttede fra land til by for at arbejde, studere eller bare prÞve lykken.
I dag virker pensionaternes sÊrlige blanding af fÊllesskab, flirt og frikadeller umiddelbart gammeldags. Men med vores stigende fokus pÄ bÊredygtighed og minimering af ressourceforbrug kan vi mÄske alligevel blive inspireret af, hvordan pensionaterne udnyttede stordriftsfordele og samtidig formÄede at give tusindvis af mennesker et hjem i byen.
