A partir de 1933, el barrio de Rehavia, en Jerusalén, establecido como ciudad jardín a principios de la década de 1920, se convirtió en el epicentro de la comunidad judeoalemana de Israel. Allí llegaron entre otros los escritores Else Lasker-Schüler, Gershom Scholem y Martin Buber huyendo de la persecución nazi y, junto a muchos de sus compatriotas, crearon un auténtico microcosmos germanojudío en la capital del país. Aunque el barrio, que contaba con una ubicación idílica, pronto se convirtió en el punto de mira de una ciudad largamente dividida, también representó un importante lugar de encuentro que promovió el espíritu de fraternidad y concordia entre diferentes pueblos.
