Digtere skrev værker fulde af meningsløse ord som "gaga blung" og samlede sig i en bevægelse af multikunstnere, de kaldte for Dada, mens irske James Joyce og engelske Virginia Woolf forlod de traditionelle romanformer og hengav sig til litterære karakterers associative bevidsthedsstrømme.
