I de mÞrke celler levede de indsatte ikke kun af vand og brÞd, for den hÄrde kost bestod ogsÄ af vold og lang varetÊgt. MistÊnkte havde ikke mange chancer for at bevise deres uskyld. Ville de ikke tilstÄ, rÞg de ofte ind pÄ ubestemt tid. SÄ kunne de lÊre det. ForhÞrsdommere, betjente og arrestforvarere lyttede nemlig ikke til folk fra samfundets bund. Grundloven fra 1849 lovede dog bod og bedring i stedet for mishandling af misdÊderne, men fÞrst i 1919 trÄdte Danmark med retsreformen ud af enevÊldens og politistatens skygge. Nu skulle retssikkerhed erstatte magtarrogance.
