1953 var et afgørende år i Grønlands historie. Verdens største ø gik fra at være noget så eksotisk som en dansk koloni til noget så kedeligt som et dansk amt. Den grønlandske elite ville lede den fattige nation bort fra sælfangst og ind i det 20. århundrede med sygehuse og moderne skoler. Samtidig krævede FN rapporter fra Danmark om Grønlands status som koloni, og det ville danske politikere undgå. Begge ønsker blev opfyldt, da man ændrede Grundloven og lukkede Grønland ind i Danmarks Rige i 1953. I dag har mange grønlandske politikere foretaget en halv grønlændervending og vil vriste øen fri af rigsfællesskabet. Jens Lei Wendel-Hansen, postdoc ved Syddansk Universitet og tidligere adjunkt ved Grønlands Universitet, giver det historiske overblik over forholdet mellem Grønland og Danmark. Og over udviklingen både før og efter 1953.
