I efteråret 1889 vandt Thomas Edisons fonograf genklang i København. Nu blev det for alvor muligt at optage og gengive lyd, og et betaget publikum strømmede til for at høre vidundermaskinen. Frem til midten af 1890'erne optog grosserer Gottfried Ruben og instrumentmager Theodor Cornelius-Knudsen et bredt udvalg af tidens populære sangere, skuespillere og musikere. Mange af disse skrøbelige fonografvalser har mirakuløst overlevet frem til i dag.
Nu har Det Kgl. Bibliotek i Aarhus, digitaliseret optagelserne og vakt Danmarks ældste lydspor til live. I bogen fortæller lektor i musikvidenskab Steen Kaargaard Nielsen og forhenværende lydteknisk konsulent ved Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium Claus Byrith om fonografen og Ruben-samlingens historie og giver os en læsevenlig lytteguide, så vi i dag kan gå på opdagelse i en næsten glemt kulturskat.
