Frem til midten af 1890'erne optog grosserer Gottfried Ruben og instrumentmager Theodor Cornelius-Knudsen et bredt udvalg af tidens populære sangere, skuespillere og musikere. Mange af disse skrøbelige fonografvalser har mirakuløst overlevet frem til i dag. Nu har Det Kgl. Bibliotek i Aarhus, digitaliseret optagelserne og vakt Danmarks ældste lydspor til live. I bogen fortæller lektor i musikvidenskab Steen Kaargaard Nielsen og forhenværende lydteknisk konsulent ved Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium Claus Byrith om fonografen og Ruben-samlingens historie og giver os en læsevenlig lytteguide, så vi i dag kan gå på opdagelse i en næsten glemt kulturskat.
