Helmut Krämer untersucht in diesem Band die für die Schottische Aufklärung des 18. Jahrhunderts zentralen Aspekte Zuversicht und Kontingenz. Zuversicht, als eine Form der auf die Zukunft gerichteten Erwartung, betrifft jegliche Handlungsabsicht, auch das politische Handeln. Der Raum, in den hinein gehandelt wird, ist (ergebnis)offen: kontingent. In diesem Spannungsfeld entwickelten die schottischen Denker die angelsächsische Moralphilosophie zu einer "science of man" – der Grundstein der zukünftigen sozialwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen. Deren implizites Ziel ist es, dazu beizutragen, dass Zukunft "verfügbar", also "Kontingenz bewältigt" wird. Der Autor geht dabei den Fragen nach, wie sich dieser Ansatz aus dem vorauslaufenden angelsächsischen Diskurs entwickelt hat, was ihn kennzeichnet und was er leistet.
