Während Regularkanoniker inzwischen ebenso gut erforscht sind wie das Mönchtum und seine Entwicklung in den verschiedenen Orden, standen die Säkularkanoniker weitaus weniger im Fokus der historischen Wissenschaften. Das mag damit zusammenhängen, dass sie keine Orden oder Kongregationen ausbildeten, über die sie systematisch betrachtet werden könnten. Dementsprechend widmen sich bisher vorgelegte Publikationen zumeist einem einzelnen Dom-- oder Kollegiatstift und nehmen nicht das Phänomen insgesamt in den Blick. Auch die vorliegende Publikation mag darüber keinen vollständigen Überblick geben, verfolgt jedoch einen vergleichenden Ansatz, in dem das Institut der Säkularkanoniker in einem europäischen Längsschnitt vom Polarkreis bis nach Süditalien betrachtet wird. Dabei werden Dom- und Kollegiatstifte in skandinavischen, deutschen, polnischen und italienischen Gebieten und die jeweiligen Wege des Eintritts in diese Institutionen analysiert. Nur in Einzelfällen wird dabei auf das frühe Mittelalter zurückgegriffen, in dem etwa auch Domkanoniker eine vita communis in einem Domkloster unterhielten, vielmehr wenden wir uns den Jahrhunderten im Hoch- und Spätmittelalter zu, in dem die Stifte bis zur Reformation ihre volle Ausformung erlangten.

Die Beiträge dieses Bandes gehen zurück auf Sektionen auf dem International Medieval Congress 2018 in Leeds. Beiträger sind namhafte internationale Historikerinnen und Historiker: Antonio Antonetti (Caserta), Anna Minara Ciardi (Stockholm), Emanuele Curzel (Trento), Sigrun Høgetveit Berg (Tromsø), Jochen Johrendt (Wuppertal), Anna Kowalska-Pietrzak (?ód?), Arnold Otto (Nürnberg), Kirsi Salonen (Turku), Jörg Wunschhofer (Beckum).
