Efter salut fra Kronborg begav Christian 4.s ostindiske flåde sig i 1618 afsted i novembermørket. Målet var Asiens fjerne riger, der duftede dejligt af krydderier, penge og prestige, og trods sørøvere, sygdomme og svigt undervejs nåede fartøjerne frem. Længere væk, end noget dansk skib nogensinde havde sejlet. På bredden af Indiens østkyst grundlagde de udsendte søfolk Danmarks asiatiske udpost, kolonien Trankebar, der i de næste 225 år spillede en vital rolle i dansk søfart. I Asien tjente ivrige iværksættere svimlende summer i 1700-tallet, og nye rederier kastede anker i 1800-tallet. Så når danske containerskibe i dag bryder bølgerne og anløber havne verden over, har de mere end 400 års historie i kølvandet.
