Die Aufklärung errichtet ›Systeme‹, zugleich und vermehrt aber entwirft sie ihr Wissen in ›Versuchen‹. Der ›Versuch‹ der Aufklärung bewegt sich dabei in einem epistemischen Zwischenraum, er partizipiert an der aufkommenden Experimentalkultur wie auch der Praxis des essayistischen Schreibens, ohne gleichsam in einer von beiden vollends aufzugehen. Die Studie nimmt es mit einer im 18. Jahrhundert immens beliebten, dort jedoch meist implizit gebliebenen und in der Forschung bislang unberücksichtigten Gattung auf. Sie verfolgt Möglichkeitsbedingungen und Zirkulationsbewegungen des ›Versuchs‹ in verschiedenen Erkenntnisfeldern wie auch sein rasches Ende an der Wende zum 19. Jahrhundert.
