L'8 febbraio 1944 il piroscafo Petrella, stipato di circa 3.100 soldati italiani, fu affondato da due siluri inglesi al largo della baia di Souda, a Creta. I carcerieri tedeschi non dettero scampo ai prigionieri che cercavano di salvarsi gettandosi nelle acque dell'Egeo. Molti di loro furono soccorsi da pescatori greci che, alla vista della nave in fiamme, non esitarono a sfidare i marosi e le mitragliatrici. Severino Larese, tenente della divisione Siena, padre dell'autrice, fu tra coloro che ebbero salva la vita ma in famiglia non parlò quasi mai di questa drammatica vicenda.
Dopo la sua morte, per colmare un vuoto, l'autrice decide di andare alla ricerca dei fatti accaduti a Creta e si imbatte nell'ecatombe degli Internati militari italiani (Imi), i prigionieri di Hitler.
Il libro è un viaggio nel tempo e nei luoghi in cui Severino Larese trascorse due anni terribili della sua gioventù, una testimonianza degli eventi tragici vissuti sotto l'occupazione germanica dalla popolazione cretese e dalla comunità ebraica dell'isola, la più antica d'Europa, annientata nella Soluzione Finale.
